Legacy Wood Products and Environmental Stewardship

A Legacy Green Initiative

Legacy manufactures tens of thousands of crates each year. We employ some of the top designers and craftsmen in the crating industry. We run multiple shifts and have a wealth of experience which allows us to provide crates that range from highly specialized custom crates to high volume production crates.

As one of the top producers of custom crating products. Legacy consumes a significant amount of wood in the production of these crates. However, we only use lumber harvested from tree farms, and no indigenous trees are cut down to make the lumber we use. All of our wood is also 100% compliant with the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM 15) to prevent the international transport and spread of disease and insects that could negatively affect plants or ecosystems.

Along with carefully sourcing and inspecting our wood we also make wood waste reduction a priority in our design program. This reduces the amount of wood consumed and allows us to be even more competitive in our pricing. 100% of the wood that we do not use in the production of crates is sent to a recycler and used in the manufacture of other wood based products.

Legacy strongly believes we have a responsibility to our customers, our communities and our planet to take steps that help ensure a cleaner and brighter tomorrow, and we are committed to the responsible use of our natural resources.

Legacy Protects Your Sensitive Products with Climate Control Trailers

Legacy has a fleet of specialized climate controlled trailers for temperature sensitive shipments. You can specify the temperature and humidity range to be maintained during the entire trip. These units are specially equipped to control and continuously monitor the climate inside the trailer.

These trailers are equipped with climate control units as well as electronic sensors inside the trailer to keep tabs on interior environmental conditions. These sensors monitor, record and document temperature and humidity readings, then communicate this data to a satellite every 15 minutes. This information is tracked at Legacy and also is available to the customer. The sensors have a built-in warning system that will send an email and a text message to a cell phone if the environmental conditions fall out of the specified range. The driver is immediately notified to make necessary corrections.

These specialized trailers are used for transporting items such as fine art, high value collectibles and sensitive medical, aerospace or other electronic equipment. They are also used for transporting fine wine collections. Recently Legacy transported a large fine wine collection where the temperature was maintained between 68 and 72 degrees during several days of transit…and mission accomplished!

Do you have a need for a climate controlled trailer? Legacy also offers climate controlled storage at our Chicago facility. Please contact your account rep for more info or contact us here. If you prefer, we can be reached at 800-827-0900.

Should you Ship Your Trade Show Properties to the Advanced Warehouse or Direct to Show Site?

Legacy can help you decide which choice is best for you. There are PROS and CONS to both methods:

Shipping to the Advanced Warehouse - PROS:
  • Your shipment will receive priority delivery to show site
  • If properties are coming from a previous show, Advanced allows free storage for 30 days. This eliminates having to send freight back or to a storage facility and shipping it out a second time – less handling and less cost.
  • You can schedule your labor start time knowing your booth should be there

Shipping to the Advanced Warehouse – CONS:
  •  Drayage rates can be higher because of double handling
  •  Higher risk of damage because of double handling
  •  Less prep time before show
  •  No pad wrapped or loose freight can be sent to the Advanced Warehouse

Shipping Direct to Show Site – PROS:
  • Interstate shipments utilizing Unigroup Logistics/Legacy Transportation will not incur waiting time charges!
  • Less handling of freight so less chance of damage
  • More prep time before show
  • Can ship pad wrapped and loose freight direct to show site
  • Drayage rates can be lower without double handling

Shipping Direct to Show Site – CONS:
  • No guaranteed delivery time to your booth site so it's more difficult to schedule labor, because wait time can be very difficult to predict
  • Wait time fees can vary drastically and cannot be planned in advance (note: wait fee is waived on interstate shipments using Unigroup Logistics/Legacy Transportation)

Contact a Legacy customer service rep at 800-297-0990 to help you decide which option is best for your company, your show and shipment.

Legacy Tips the Scale!

Our New Portable Scale Assures Accurate Weights Anywhere

Accurate weighing of your cargo is essential for air, ocean and ground shipments. This information is needed by Legacy to formulate our load plan for your shipment. Knowing weights in advance will also help you budget your shipping costs. Many companies do not have scales to weigh items before they leave a facility. Legacy's new Portable Scale can be brought right to your facility where it can be used to weigh virtually any size piece you have. The scale system is small enough to fit into a 3' x 3' rolling case.

This scale can be used to weigh a piece as large as a 20' ocean container or an automobile; it has a maximum load capacity of 17,000 lbs. Cargo is placed squarely on four weight pads which are connected to a computer. The individual weight of each corner is added to make the total weight. This information is transmitted to the computer attached to the pads, and can be printed out for Legacy as well as your company.

A BETTER ROAD SHOW DEMO SOLUTION

A LEGACY customer discusses the portable road show cases designed and built by LEGACY to improve sales and save costs. LEGACY designed and built the cases as well as ships them to each demonstration location.

How did you demo your product prior to this? What was the problem these cases were designed to solve?
Most times the sales team members opted to take a single monitor hoping the customer would like it. Sometimes we hit the mark, and that monitor was exactly what the customer needed at the right price. But if that one monitor was not the best solution, we could only talk about other options. We couldn’t show them how another product better met their needs. If we were lucky, we'd get another chance to bring a different monitor later. But a lot of times we lost the sale. If instead we chose to bring several monitors, significant time and expense went into shipping and setup. We had to take over conference room space for half a day to setup for a demonstration, with wires and connectors everywhere. This made our products look difficult to use. And neither situation allowed us to showcase the full range of features and products.

Why did you choose this method? And how are the road cases being used?
After considering several methods, we chose the road cases. Legacy didn't just give us the best option, they designed the perfect solution. Now instead of single-monitor demos, we have two sets of cases that travel throughout the U.S. to dealers and other customers. Legacy handles all of the scheduling to ensure the cases are where they need to be, while still controlling transit costs.

We can easily bring the entire line to the customer, neatly housed in a custom display cabinet. These cases contain everything the sales reps might need to provide a full experience. The monitors are mounted on subpanels for easy product updates; while three drawers hold projection and display equipment, controls and connectors, and a full array of printed materials. Legacy even thought to install a single, retractable power cord to avoid the unsightly mess of cables.

Because of their size, we are able to use these road cases in any setting. They fit through a standard door, and inside a New York elevator. They set up in 5-minutes instead of a half day. And we can count on a clean, professional appearance because each unit has a custom-fitted protective pad.

How have these cases impacted your demo process positively?
The response to the roadshow cases has been phenomenal, both from our internal staff and our customers. The sales staff loves the fact that they can roll them in place, and allow a customer to pick and choose from the full menu of options. And the drop door on the back allows them to troubleshoot and correct any issues in minutes. The customers really like being able to see and feel the whole picture, the emotional connection. And they appreciate the more complete education we are able to give them. Conceptually, the design was a great idea. And in practice, there is no downside to them. None at all. We could not be happier.

Managing Your Exhibit Properties Online

Did you know Legacy offers an exhibit inventory management program which allows you to manage all of your tradeshow properties stored at Legacy? This is a powerful collaborative system with access 24/7 from anywhere that allows you to organize your trade show schedules, properties, costs and other records; check on inventory availability; access historical information; meet multiple deadlines; track costs; order up shipments, etc.

You can include full descriptions and photos of each item in your current inventory. You can request Legacy to pull booth properties for shipping or inspection.

You can track all of your properties and the events they are currently being used at as well as events they may be scheduled for in the future. This eliminates the risk of the same properties being pulled for events occurring in the same time frame.

This software can be used as a tradeshow calendar with notifications to remind you of important show deadlines and shipping dates. You can place your shipping orders directly through this system. You can also use it as a budget tool to track your tradeshow spending.

Ask your account rep or customer service rep if you'd like more info, or contact us.

Do you need an ATA Carnet for your shipment?

Commonly referred to as "A Passport for your Merchandise" a Carnet, or ATA Carnet, is an international customs document that enables the temporary import of goods to countries outside the U.S. without payment of duty and tax. Over 80 countries around the world are members of the ATA Council and recognize this instrument for import/export purposes. It is used to avoid paying high duties and import taxes, which can exceed 20 or even 30% on permanently imported goods.

A Carnet is generally valid for one year from its date of issuance and your goods must exit the country within that 12 month period. They must be signed back into U.S. Customs before the Carnet expires. There are cases where a Carnet can be extended, but if you have not applied for an extension and the Carnet expires before your goods have returned, a fine may be levied.

Virtually all types of goods and equipment can be transported under the ATA Carnet and they are typically used for tradeshows and special events where goods and equipment are not being sold or permanently imported. One important benefit for the use of a Carnet is that you can hold a private event anywhere within a country -- such as a customer site or a resort -- and not be limited to a tradeshow venue. You would not list any giveaway items or products you are selling that you know will not return to the USA.

Another example:  a mobile exhibit tour going to Canada requires a Carnet to cross the border – all equipment in the trailer is documented. The driver will stop at a U.S. Customs office on the U.S. side of the border and have the Carnet (the declared goods) stamped out of the United States. He then drives into Canada, immediately stops at the Canadian Customs office just inside their border and has the document (declared goods) signed into Canada. These signatures are placed on "counterfoils" which are presented each time a Carnet enters and leaves a given country. The process is reversed when returning to the USA with the mobile exhibit.

Additional counterfoils can be purchased from the Council Offices depending on the number of times/countries you expect your products to travel to in the 1 year period. If Legacy is handling transport of your goods or the mobile exhibit tour, we can arrange for the Carnet.

Spotlight on Legacy Fleet Maintenance

Mike Quinn, Senior Vice President at Legacy, was recently interviewed by American Trucker magazine about Legacy's preventive fleet maintenance program.

What is the primary focus of your business?
The primary focus of our business is servicing clients with specialized transportation and logistics needs, moving more into the world of providing full-service logistics solutions. We handle a lot of medical, aerospace, and tradeshow work. Our team is dedicated to one thing—absolute excellence in meeting customer needs.

How do you handle maintenance to minimize downtime? What are your mileage intervals for preventive maintenance?
The best way to minimize downtime is through preventive maintenance. Though DOT requires inspection at 180 days, Legacy adheres to an aggressive 90-day inspection schedule with 10,000-mi. service intervals.

How do you ensure good tire mileage?
First, we start with high-quality tires. We also rely on driver training, because even the best tires will give out if they're not properly maintained. Each driver is issued a tire pressure gauge and instructed to check tire pressure every day to ensure proper wear. The end result has been fewer flats, longer mileage, and better fuel consumption.

Helping Keep the Air Clean

Legacy Green Initiatives

The State of California is the nation's leader in developing clean air plans to attain air quality standards established under both the Federal and California Clean Air Acts.

Legacy works with CARB (California Air Resources Board) on not only complying with, but exceeding annual expectations of Particulate Matter, or noxious emissions. All of our equipment receives certified inspections every 90 days (federal law only requires this to be done every six months).

Legacy has over 140 pieces of equipment, and all are compliant, including all of our climate-controlled units, which are a mix of newly purchased trailers and upgraded existing trailers.

Legacy is purchasing new tractors instead of installing aftermarket emissions devices. In 2012 we added 8 new tractors. These Kenworth T660's are some of the most aerodynamic, fuel efficient tractors available on the market today.

Legacy uses only Smart Way CARB compliant tires to further lower our greenhouse footprint.

Legacy Jumps, Runs, Wins for United Way

Legacy was the Fourth Place winner in the fifth annual "Virtual United Way 5K" sponsored by Unigroup. This event raised more than $30,000 for the United Way, a portion of which went to the United Way of Silicon Valley.

The Virtual 5k is a Unigroup program with agents around the country competing against each other through employees' physical fitness activities while raising funds for the agency's local United Way. 15 agents participated in this Virtual 5K. For every 20 minutes of exercise reported by each team member, the team earned one point.

Legacy also had two of the top five individual winners – these people earned the highest total points. The program started on Sept 10 and ended Dec 7, 2012.

Legacy's Crating Solution Saves the Day!

When transporting sensitive equipment, the most important thing to consider is the shock absorption, as well as the x, y, and z movement of the item in the crate.

One such situation had Legacy redesigning crates to alleviate damage to the equipment and the systems inside.

The client's previous crate design had shock absorption material built into the base pallet. When secured in the trailer, the x and y movement was inhibited, thus causing the system to move as a whole left and right, back and forth, inside the crate. With the oversized base, the crate would come away from the base pallet itself and the pallet would bend under the weight of the server rack system inside.

Our design has a floating base inside the crate. The racks are secured to this floating base, which allows for the appropriate protection and movement, while the crates are secured in the trailer. Additionally, Legacy's new design allows for proper weight distribution and support across the base pallet.

Climate Control in Alaska Wintertime

A new meaning to climate control shipments -- Legacy recently delivered a medical system to a hospital in Anchorage, Alaska – outside temperature was minus 38 degrees!  Inside the trailer was a comfortable 68 – 70 degrees!
